Allergen & Safe Use

I want you to enjoy your candle, your wax melt, and your soap — and to do that safely. Please read this page before lighting or using any LinaBloom product.

Allergens & sensitivities

LinaBloom candles, wax melts, and bar soap contain fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are complex blends, and a small percentage of people may be sensitive to one or more of their components.

My products may contain components that are common fragrance allergens, including:

  • Linalool
  • Limonene
  • Citronellol
  • Geraniol
  • Eugenol
  • Cinnamal
  • Coumarin
  • Hexyl cinnamal
  • Benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate
  • Hydroxycitronellal

The specific components vary by scent. Each product page lists known fragrance allergens for that scent under "Ingredients." If you have a known fragrance sensitivity, please review the product page before purchase, or email me at andrew@linabloomcandles.com and I'll send you the full allergen profile.

Soap allergens. My bar soap contains saponified plant oils, glycerin, and fragrance. If you have sensitive skin or a history of soap reactions, patch-test a small area inside your forearm for 24 hours before using on your face or body. Discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor if irritation occurs.

Pets. Some fragrance components are safe for humans but can irritate or harm pets, particularly birds and cats. If you have pets, burn candles in well-ventilated areas and don't leave them unattended around your animals.

Pregnancy. A few essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy. If you're pregnant or nursing, consult your healthcare provider before using strongly fragranced products.

Candle safety

A burning candle is an open flame. Treat it like one.

Before you light:

  • Place the candle on a heat-resistant, level, non-flammable surface.
  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch (about 6mm) before every burn. Untrimmed wicks cause mushrooming, soot, and uneven flame.
  • Keep the candle at least 12 inches (30cm) away from anything that can burn — curtains, books, paper, plants.
  • Keep candles out of drafts (open windows, fans, vents) to prevent uneven burns and flame jumping.

While burning:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never burn near or within reach of children or pets.
  • The first burn should be long enough to melt the wax pool to the edge of the vessel — usually 2–3 hours for an 8oz, 3–4 hours for a 12oz. Short first burns cause "tunneling."
  • Don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time. After 4 hours, extinguish, let cool, trim, and relight.
  • The vessel will be hot. Don't touch it during or for at least an hour after burning.

When to stop burning:

  • Stop burning when ½ inch (12mm) of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Burning below that level can crack the vessel from heat.

Putting it out:

  • Use a candle snuffer or dip the wick into the wax with a wick dipper, then straighten it back up. This prevents smoke and wax splatter.
  • Don't blow it out unless that's all you have — blowing can cause wax to splatter.

Wax melt safety

Wax melts use a warmer, not a flame, but the wax and the warmer dish get hot.

  • Use only with a UL-listed electric wax warmer or a tealight warmer designed for melts. Don't try to melt on a stovetop or in the microwave.
  • Place the warmer on a level, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts and flammable items.
  • Don't add water, essential oils, or anything else to the melt.
  • Don't leave a heated warmer unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
  • To change scents, let the warmer cool completely, then either soak the cooled wax with cotton balls or pour the still-liquid wax into a disposable container.

Soap safety

  • For external use only. Don't ingest.
  • Keep out of eyes. If soap contacts your eyes, rinse with clean water for 15 minutes; if irritation persists, consult a doctor.
  • Patch-test for sensitivity if you have a history of skin reactions to fragranced products.
  • Store bar soap in a draining dish away from continuous water — it'll last much longer.

What to do if something goes wrong

  • Fire: Smother small flames with a metal lid or baking soda — never water. Call 911 for anything you can't control immediately.
  • Burns: Cool the burn with running water for 10–20 minutes. Cover with a clean cloth. Seek medical attention for burns larger than a quarter, on the face/hands/genitals, or on a child.
  • Allergic reaction: Stop using the product. Wash the area with mild soap and water. Take an antihistamine if you have one. Seek medical attention if breathing is affected or swelling spreads.
  • Pet ingested wax or soap: Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.
